Dislocated Worker

You've lost your job.  It's important to remember that others have survived the same  situation.  What are you going to do?  Hopefully this information can help you, but first you must be willing to take some steps yourself.  You must be willing to carefully examine yourself, consider all of your options, and then take the appropriate action.

This may be the first time in your life that you have the opportunity to actually take a look at yourself, to really think about your values and priorities, and choose from your career options.  This is not easy, but the end result is worth it.  Counselors can help give you directions, but only you know yourself.  Some points for you to consider are:

  • What skills do I have to offer an employer?  Where can I use these skills?

  • What do I enjoy doing?  Can I find a way to get paid for doing the things I like to do?  What working conditions do I enjoy?  Do I like to work with other people, or work outdoors, or use machinery?

  • How much money must I earn to support the lifestyle I want for my family?  Can I compromise?

  • Does the local area meet my needs? (Find out what jobs are in demand locally; read newspaper ads, both local and out-of-town (out-of-town newspapers are available in the library) talk with the local Employment Development Department office).

  • If I don't want to relocate out of the county I reside in, how can I compromise?

  • How does my spouse and/or family feel about this, and what do they expect from me?
