Paid Family Leave Workshop Draws Many Local Businesses

On July 15th, Holly Schirmer and I presented a brief overview of the new Paid Family Leave program. This new program went into effect July 1, 2004 and covers all employees who pay into State Disability Insurance. In short, this program allows employees to take up to 6 weeks off to care for a seriously ill family member, or to bond with a new child. For more information, please review our power point presentation

In addition to the presentation in Lassen County, Holly and I traveled to Modoc County and presented the same information to Modoc County businesses.

Confidentiality Training Throughout Lassen County

During the months of August and September, Holly and I traveled to Herlong, Bieber and Westwood and provided confidentiality training to the Family Resource Centers. These centers are operated by COMPAC. This was a fee-for-service contract which generated some program income. In addition, it allowed us the opportunity to travel throughout our county and meet with local business owners to discuss their workforce development needs.

Human Resource Solutions Team off to a GREAT Start

We kicked off our HR Solutions offerings in July 2004 and our phones have not stopped ringing. To date, we have served 88 businesses and have made 193 contacts. One business that we would like to highlight is Big Valley Power Company, LLC. We were first introduced to Big Valley Power Company, LLC. during a meeting with Community Development Department. During this meeting, we discussed their business needs, which included everything from recruiting to hiring, to providing monthly safety meetings. Through a serious of telephone meetings, Holly and I met with the owners in Bieber on August 11th. We had the opportunity to learn more about the power plant business and provide them with valuable business services. We are assisting them with all the HR needs. To date, we have done the following business services:

  • Recruiting for open positions-9/14 and 9/16 in Bieber
  • Provided updated Personnel Policy and Job Descriptions
  • Conducted Interviews in Bieber on 10/14 and 10/15
  • Provided Employer Posters
  • Prepared monthly Safety Training Meetings
