AFWD - The Big Picture
Holly
Schirmer, Director of Business Services and Traci Holt, Executive
Director
for AFWD, had the privilege of presenting at the October 2007, WIB/GB
Meeting. The focus of the presentation was to highlight AFWD's successes
from
July 1, 2007. AFWD started 2007-2008 renewed emphasis on the business
first philosophy. The business first approach places the highest priority
on
serving the human
resource needs of small businesses. As more business
customers are pleased with the services received from the One-Stops,
including
recruiting assistance, the more job orders they bring to the One-Stops.
And
more job orders bring in more job seekers, which increase the applicant
pool available to employers. It’s a win, win situation for small
business and
job seekers. Our motto is, “Serving businesses to serve job
seekers.”
We have worked
diligently to reorganize the operations of the company to
implement procedures that meet the needs of businesses. AFWD offers
its
services in four counties including Lassen, Plumas, Sierra, and Modoc,
an
area covering over 13,000 sq miles.
The results
so far have been very impressive. More employers are utilizing
AFWD’s human resource services and the requests for job order
posting and
customized recruitments are growing each week. Customized recruitments
range from accepting applications for the employer, to pre screening,
interviewing
, and reference checking. In addition, the numbers of job seekers
coming to
the One-Stops continues to grow. Currently AFWD has an applicant pool
of
close to 500 job seekers looking for work. That’s the kind of
pool that employers
are eager to tap. The bottom line is that people are obtaining satisfying
jobs
in the communities in which they live, and our businesses are getting
the
employees they are looking for.

Another
Great Success Story.......
We here at
AFWD would like to Congratulate Gregory Todd for successfully
completing his C10 Electrical Contractors license. Greg came into
the Lassen
Career Network in January of this year. He had been laid off from
HL Power.
Greg had been working in construction for over 30 years prior to being
laid off
and had always wanted to obtain the C10 license. In fact, he stated
that his wife
had been pushing him to get it for the last 20 years. Through his
own hard work
and AFWD’s continuous encouragement Greg finally obtained his
goal. Greg
has stated several times in the last month that without AFWD’s
encouragement
he may never have ventured toward obtaining the C10 license that he
has been
wanting for years. Once again AFWD would like to Congratulate Greg
for all his
hard work.
Susan Miller-Dooley
came through our one-stop to get some help with job
search. She had moved to Susanville from Quincy and had a lot of grocery
experience. She needed help creating a resume. We assisted her with
her
resume and referred her to Susanville Supermarket. She came back in
and
reported that she got the job. The business owner commented on how
nice
her resume was. Susan has been at Susanville Supermarket for a little
over a month now and she really likes it. She is planning on staying
there
for a long time. CONGRATULATIONS Susan!

Financing
Your Business
WIRED
Event
On Tuesday,
December 11, 2007 a cutting edge regional conference targeting
existing businesses and potential entrepreneurs was held in Susanville
at
Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. “Financing Your
Business”
was designed to help business owners and start-ups understand the
various
financing sources that may be available to them, with an emphasis
on practical
information on selecting the most suitable sources of funding for
their particular
situation. The conference was co-sponsored by the NoRTEC.
AFWD provides
innovative strategies that emphasize serving the needs of small
business in order
to help them prosper and provide more opportunities for job seekers.
“Financing Your Business” was the first such event in
the area. The event ran
from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and attracted over 50 small business
owners and
entrepreneurs from throughout the region who came to hear what types
of
business financing are available, and the steps necessary to attain
it.

Sexual
Harassment Prevention Training Meets Labor Law
Requirements.
On November
13th and 14th Holly Schirmer, AFWD’s Director of Business
Services, provided Sexual Harassment Prevention Training to 24 area
managers and supervisors. This training is offered by AFWD twice a
year.
This training meets the requirements of California AB 1825 for business’s
with 50 or more employees. Each attendee receives a certificate upon
completion of the workshop.
The interactive
workshop covers a wide rage of topics. For example, Holly
answers the question of what constitutes sexual harassment. Many other
topics
are covered as well, including recent court cases affecting businesses,
how to
prevent harassment as well as how to respond to it.
This workshop
is always well received here in Lassen County. We get calls
asking when the next workshop will be. Local business managers and
supervisors save time and money by attending our local Sexual Harassment
Prevention Training.
AFWD New Hire
Training
On Thursday
November 8, 2007, Chris Sullivan held a WIA Training for
all four counties. Among the trainees were Hyun Kim and Cathy Beach
from
Plumas County, Dianna Simar from Sierra County, Mary Martin from Modoc
County and Alicia Fogal, Denise Larimer, Henri Daughtery and Heidi
Elder
from Lassen County.
Chris Sullivan’s
training included step by step procedures for new clients,
from collecting WIA applications, to what form of documentation was
authorized
for eligibility, as well as entering information into the MIS NoRTEC
database
and our own office applicant pool data bases. Chris was able to break
down
and explain the differences between Adult, Youth, Dislocated Worker
and
MCLAUS candidates. The training also provided information on Supportive
Services for our clients and introduced different situations we may
face while
our clients excel through the different stages of assistance we provide.
The training
provided beneficial knowledge for each new hire to help us all
exceed
in our ability to serve clients.
