Website Technology Initiative
Utilizing software from Bizland, five local businesses got a jump start onto the internet recently through a workshop hosted at Lassen Career Network. Participants learned about internet marketing and technology and received assistance in creating their web sites during the free hands-on training. The workshops were sponsored by the AFWD and the county One Stops as part of the Website Technology Initiative which promotes the use of technology by small businesses and organizations in the nine county area covered by NoRTEC, the Northern Rural Training Employment Consortium. Thanks to John and Wes for their assistance.

February's topic was 2003 California Labor Law. Using the 2003 California Labor Law Digest, I presented a full house with the latest updates. As the Community Coordinator, I strive to provide business owners and managers with the latest up-to-date information to help them succeed.
March's topic was Group Health Insurance for Small Businesses. Scott Gage from Murray and Edwards Insurance Agency presented a wealth of information on cafeteria plans and affordable options for those that attended.

New Staff
Please join us in welcoming our new Front Line employees, Tammie Wilson and Dawn Crow. Each of them have jumped feet first into this exciting role. Their excellent customer service skills are to be commended. We are very pleased to have them on board.
New Governing Board Member
In January of this year, Lassen County Board of Supervisor Jim Chapman became our new Governing Board member. We are very pleased to have Supervisor Chapman as our Governing Board member. I had the opportunity to talk with him regarding his history in public office.
On March 5, 1974 he won his first public office victory as a City Council member for the City of Susanville. For the record, he was the youngest person ever elected to this position. In 1976 he was elected Mayor of Susanville and served 1 year and then in January 1977 he was elected as the District 2 Supervisor for Lassen County. He remained a Supervisor until November 1985 when he was elected on the Lassen Community College Governing Board. In January 1989 he returned to the Board of Supervisors and has served ever since. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board.
Supervisor Chapman has been a business owner since 1981. His business, Lassen Addressing, handles the 3rd class bulk mailings and all of the community mailings.
I asked him what the best part of being a Supervisor is and he said, " the diversity of the challenges that he faces and having the ability to make a difference in the community." He also said that having his own business makes him appreciate small business owners. Having this experience has helped him as a public official.
