SIERRA COUNTY

THE SEARCH CONTINUES....

As of July of 2006, the communities of Sierra County have become part of the Alliance for Workforce Development's service area. The new Workforce Investment Board members representing Sierra County are; Peter Heubner (Governing Board), Gale Ross Gordon (WIB Member), Carol Roberts (WIB Member), and Todd Sloan (WIB Member). AFWD, Inc. is looking forward to providing services to job seekers and businesses to Sierra County and its communities.

Our ongoing challenge to secure a location has continued to be our focus for some time now. It seems that Loyalton has limited space available that meets our requirments. Opening an location is exhausting to say the least. Despite this challenge, AFWD, Inc. has established relationships in Sierra County that have proved to be beneficial for all.

We are continuing our pursuit of a location and staff to meet the needs of the community. I would like to thank Pete Heubner, Sierra County Supervisor for his efforts with the location challenge.

OFF THEY GO.....

THE ALLIANCE FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, INC. OFFERS IT'S FIRST WORKSHOP IN SIERRA COUNTY

The Calpine Post Office was the site for our first workshop in the County. Sarah DeForest and Jeff Finch, both Human Resource Specialists for AFWD, were on hand to provide Hiring 101 to business owners and employees in Sierra County. The Hiring 101 workshop was offered to four counties over four days in the same week. But with Sierra County being new to AFWD, we eagerly anticipated this one more than usual.

The turnout was low but that was to be expected since we are relatively new to the communities. Both employers and employees seem pleased that services made available through AFWD and the Workforce Investment Act are offered in their county.

The hiring 101 workshop provided "best practices" with recruitment and retention for employers. The tried and true program also featured feedback from business owners who know their labor force and the challenges involved. We will continue to provide workshops and other services to both employers and job seekers throughout Sierra County.

NORTEC VISIT

The Northern Rural Training and Employment Consortium held it's latest Program Director's Meeting in Sierra County. Downtown Downieville was teeming with NoRTEC staff on the 28th and 29th of September. The picture above is proof that the highly professional participants enjoyed their stay.

The staff enjoyed fine dining at the Grubsteak Restaurant while they discussed business, changes, and expectations with the Workforce Investment Act. The weather was just about perfect and the staff at the Grubsteak could not have been more accommodating. Thank you Mary and Don!

Though the intention was business oreinted, many of the staff enjoyed Downieville after the meetings. The lore and majesty of this beautiful area will remian with staff forever. They even had to take a test on their knowledge of Sierra County, which most everyone passed.

We would like to thank Jim Johnston, owner of Camp Yuba and Sierra County Chamber of Commerce Director for his assistance in organizing with local Inn Keepers and with the Grubsteak for the accomodations.

BASSETTS FIRE

Above are just a few of the photos taken of the Bassetts Fire that recently burned over 2000 acres in Sierra County. Bassetts Station located between Sierra City and the Yuba Pass was a staging point for Fire Fighting Crews as pictured above. In fact, the bottom picture was taken from the store and restaurant off of Hwy. 49. The fire started September 19th and burned for over a week.

There were over 1100 personnel from as far away as Australia working to contain this fire. A total of 14 crews, 13 engines, 10 water tenders and much more fire equipment particpated to provide containment. High winds and rugged terrrain made fighting this fire very difficult.
