One Stop Activities

Sierra Work Connection has been a busy place since the New Year. As we continue to offer our expertise and services to the communities in Sierra County we are beginning to see some exciting results. We have been working hard on a community campaign to make sure that local job seekers know we are here to support them in their job search efforts. As the months go by we are seeing a significant increase in the number of visitors that come into the Loyalton office to take advantage of our services.

With the arrival of spring we are looking forward to the traditional busy season for our communities. The warm weather brings with it our tourists and the hospitality jobs that go with them. In addition to the tourist jobs the construction and forest jobs are starting to open up. As the spring approaches we continue to form new relationships and renew existing relationships with local businesses needing seasonal workers. We are posting more job listings in our office and continue to offer help with all of the HR needs our local businesses.

We have expanded services to Downieville twice a month at the Social Services building (22 Maiden Lane) for the west side of Sierra County. With the inclimate weather, travel from our Loyalton office to Downieville was not always possible but we continue to strive to make our services available to all of Sierra County. The Downieville businesses are now enjoying the springtime temperatures and needing our help in filling seasonal position that allows their tourist industry to thrive. We plan to keep the existing schedule unless we see a need to increase our time there to every week.

Athea Stephenson continues to work with the youth of Sierra County. We are thrilled to report that our youth program is doing well with one of the participants recently passing the GED exam and another placed in a great work experience with the city of Portola.

Labor Law Workshop

On a crisp cold January morning, we held our second Labor Law workshop for Sierra County. It was hosted by Nadine Norton and The Sierra Valley Lodge in Calpine. Traci Holt gave an informative presentation about the changes in labor laws for 2008. She went over the required postings pamphlets and notices to make sure businesses were in compliance with the Department of Labor regulations. Those in attendance were treated to coffee and pastries provided by the lodge. For a copy of the presentation, click here.

Economic Development Update

A Sierra County Economic Development Meeting was held in Sierraville on March 19th. The guest speaker was Gilda Perez of the California Small Business Administration. She had some great information about getting certified as a HUB (Historically Underutilized Business) zone. She talked about the advantages HUB zone businesses have with winning government contracts. She also had great information on Small Business Administration lending programs. Sandy Sindt of the Sierra Economic Development Corporation gave us an update on when all of Sierra County can expect to have broadband internet access. We are very close to that goal. This will be a huge step for Economic Development in Sierra County. Community meetings are now scheduled in both Downieville and Loyalton for April 12th to introduce the plan and tell residents what to expect and how this service will help grow and enhance their businesses and help make their future business endeavors successful. AFWD will be in attendance at both of the meetings on April 12th.
