14th Annual Plumas/Sierra Job Fair

Hosted by Sierra Work Connection and Plumas Work Connection

Sierra in great numbers for this years Graeagle based AFWD Job Fair! Held in the Graeagle Fire Hall, jobseekers streamed through the door with new AFWD assisted resumes in hand to apply to local businesses in search of that perfect employee. Sierra had many people come into the office in days following the job fair to do one on one interview workshops, as they were getting calls from the employers.
We are hoping to hear in the upcoming weeks that our local jobseekers are finding employment thanks to the efforts of AFWD staff in putting together this years Plumas/Sierra County 14th Annual Job Fair!

She is now proficient in many programs, and now assists clients with resumes, filling out FASFA's, filing, phones and assisting with initial intakes. Joy is simply a "joy" to work with, she knows alot of people in Sierra County and has been a huge assistance with the large number of clients the Sierra Office currently sees on a day to day basis. New owners revamp and revitalize Sierra Valley Landmark!

Mr. Roy and Charles Gundite of Walnut Creek, came to Sierra County looking for a bit of quiet, relaxation and investment. They found it in a old building that had been a landmark in Sierra Valley for generations. The brothers purchased Sierra Valley Lodge and got right to work, hiring employees to redo the inside of the aging building and bring it back to its original glory. The lodge is a old log constructed building residing on Main Street in Calpine.

They have pulled out all of the floors and have started work on the dining room, bar and kitchen with the help of many contractors and new employees. Part of their master plan for Calpine and the Sierra Valley Lodge is to attract visitors to the area in all seasons, including the difficult winter season, when most businesses in the area close down. The brothers are hoping to be ready to open very soon!

Sierra County Youth

Here at the Sierra Work Connection in Loyalton we have enrolled five new young people into our Youth Program in the last two months. They have been successful in participating and completing workshops where they attain basic life skills, work readiness, job search training, customer service and interviewing skills. It has been exciting for these young people with little experience, to attain these vital skills to help them take a positive step into their futures.

Rotarians at Work Day!

Rotarians at Work Day comes once a year, where all rotarians around the world come out to help their communities with clean up. This year, Kathy Norris from Sierra Work Connection and Brendan Norris from Plumas Work Connection, participated in Loyalton's Work Day making Main Street more presentable to tourists and the community as a whole. We worked all day on more than eight businesses and homes that front to Main Street, pulling weeds, cropping trees and bushes and picking up garbage. Business owners, judges, attornies, politicians and townspeople stopped by to assist by helping with the refuse and bringing water to the rotarian workers. Main Street Loyalton, with its historic buildings and small town charm is sure to be a place that tourists and residents alike will enjoy going for a stroll in the warm summer sun.

Sierra County SOS (ECF Program) Update

The Sierra County S.O.S Program has been a huge success. We currentlyhave 45 people placed in jobs in Sierra County. We have 4 people placed in Alleghany, 10 people in Downieville and 31 in Loyalton. Not only has the program put people back to work but it has also helped businesses during these tough economic times. We are currently getting the Sierra County SOS Summer Youth Program going. We have 5 people placed in the program and look for that number to grow quickly once we start marketing the program.
