2010 Jobs Program
AFWD, Inc. and Modoc County CalWORKS have partnered together to implement the 2010 Jobs Program. This subsidized employment program is funded from The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Emergency Contingency Fund (ECF). ECF provides federal stimulus funds through September 2010 to help low income families by supporting increases in basic assistance, short-term benefits, and subsidized employment. We had 60 participants that were been placed at over 50 different work sites throughout Modoc County. About 20 participants were hired on at the jobs they were working and several others will be able to continue their employment through the CalWORKS employment program. This program was very valued in the business community as well as the by the participants.

SHRM 2010
I, Amee Albrecht, HR Consultant attended the Annual Society for Human Resource Management Conference in San Diego June 27th-30th, 2010. I attended the conference with other AFWD staff members Holly Schirmer, Bobbi Moore, Terri Hiser-Haynes, Janelle Hardig, and Kathy Norris. One of the classes I attended was Healthcare Reform & HR presented by Michael P. Aitken. This class was designed to help you better understand how the new health care law will impact business on a day-to-day basis. It was very informative. My favorite speaker was Steve Gilliland, CSP. I attended two of his workshops, Enjoy the Ride and Leading with Heart. In Enjoy the Ride he talks about reigniting your passion, never losing focus, and many other things. In Leading with Heart he talks about valuing & developing people, he also talks about developing exceptional leaders and retaining great employees. His enthusiasm is contagious and his message very clear, he is outstanding. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the SHRM Conference this year.

Success Stories
Brett Palmer
Modoc Employment Center would like to congratulate Brett Palmer. He came into the one stop looking for employment. He was previously employed as a heavy equipment operator and a contractor. Brett had also completed training and obtained a certificate in drug testing. He needed to find a Full-Time Position and was interested in pursuing a career as an Alcohol/Drug Tester. Although he had some work experience he was a good candidate for our Internship Program due to the fact he would be able to gain hands on experience in his preferred field. We referred Brett to the internship position that was available at North State Alliance as an Administrative Assistant/Test Collector. He interviewed for the position and was selected to participate. Brett successfully completed his 12 weeks of internship. After his internship was over he was able to continue working at North State Alliance under the ECF Program. When the ECF program ended on September 24th North State Alliance hired him full-time starting September 27th.
