WARNER CREEK PRISON

Lakeview, Oregon gears up for a new facility

The Oregon State Department of Corrections is moving ahead with the building plans on the Warner Creek Correctional Facility located near Lakeview Oregon. The $27 million, 400-bed men's minimum security prison will include six buildings, including a 50,000 square foot inmate housing structure. Four housing units will house up to 100 inmates in dormitory style. Other structures will include maintenance shops, an administration building, a combination kitchen-dining-laundry-inmate processing building, and an education center with a small health clinic.

Sherm Radtke, the department's Lakeview community development coordinator, said that the prison will employ 132 people and generate an annual payroll of about $7 million.

Construction should be substantially completed by July 2005 with facility open for inmates by September 2005.

The Modoc Employment Center and AFWD staff are ready to assist with the recruitment process for the job openings that will become available in 2005.

  • Individuals can find a binder with all of the job descriptions for the facility to assist them in matching their skills to potential opportunities.
  • Sherm Radtke will be attending the Modoc Job Expo on April 24th at the Modoc Employment Center.
  • Lassen Community College is looking to offer a Correctional Writing course to help prepare job seekers for correctional officer openings.

A special thank you to the Modoc staff for staying "on top" of this exciting economic development project for the region.

Customer Service Training

Desert Rose Casino

Alliance for Workfroce Development HR Consultant, Laurie Wann, worked her magic once again at Desert Rose Casino in Alturas providing Super Service Spectacular training to the entire casino staff.

The four-hour program revolves around teaching participants the following skills:

  1. How to exceed guest expectations by delivering Magical Moments
  2. Understand and describe why every employee is part of a very important "service chain".
  3. Learn how to demonstrate a powerful (and simple!) technique for connecting with your guests.
  4. Understand how body language can "make or break" your guest interactions.
  5. Learn how to graciously say "no" to guests and keep them coming back.
  6. Understand why it is so important to leave personal problems "at the door".
  7. Be able to describe why it's important to have fun at work so your guests will have fun and keep coming back!

Yea Laurie!

The Modoc Employment Center located at 221 N. Main Street has always been a great place to go to get friendly service from the AFWD front-line staff and we are happy to say "IT STILL IS!"

WELCOME JOSEPH KOWALSKI and DEBBIE CIPRIANI

Both Joseph and Debbie have been a wonderful addition to the AFWD Team in Modoc working effectively with the MEC staff and the external partner agencies to provide quality services to the entire community.

HR Solutions for Business

In preparation for the NoRTEC focus on business services, AFWD has hired three new professional HR Consultants to carry out our mission.

Pictured above (top row) is Traci Holt, Senior HR Consultant based out of Lassen, Ken Cordrey, Modoc HR Consultant, Janis Trueblood, Director of Employer Services, Tri-County area, (bottom row), Laurie Wann, Lassen/Plumas HR Consultant, Leslie Solberg, Plumas HR Consultant/Service Coordinator, Holly Schirmer, Lassen HR Consultant.

Ken Cordrey is a new face in Modoc County and will be our lead in business services out of the Alturas office. We are so excited to have him aboard. He has worked for large production corporations in the United States and abroad bringing skills in production management, manufacturing efficiencies, working within a global economy, and most importantly employee management and motivation. His background also gives him insight into OSHA compliance and safety regulations.

As many of you know, Kelley Poindexter, former Modoc Community Coordinator has moved on to new things, but fortunately she is still working out of the Modoc Employment Center and will be working closely with Ken on various business services projects.

Welcome aboard everyone!
