Sexual Harassment Prevention Workshop
Alliance For Workforce Developments Director of Business Servies Holly Schirmer presented a three-hour Sexual Harassment Prevention Training to 25 people of Modoc County Office of Education and various Modoc County businesses for the second time on October 30, 2007. The interactive training meets the requirements of AB 1825, and each participant received a certificate upon completion of the training.
Holly addressed such topics as what constitutes harassment under the law, recent court cases that impact businesses, and how to prevent, as well as respond to, workplace harassment.

Government Contracting
In a partnership with the Federal Technology Center, the Modoc Employment Center was the location of a seminar entitled "Getting Started with Government Contracting" on November 10, 2007. Three people attended the seminar, which was presented by FTC's Jayne Murnane. Murnane led attendees through the basics of both Federal and State registrations and certifications that allow businesses to contract with various government agencies. Although the process of getting started with government contracting is a complex and multifaceted one, Murnane was able break down the steps and provide information relevant to the specific businesses of the participants. For more information, visit the FTC web site at www.theftc.org

Modoc Employment Center staff have earned new certifications recently. Employment Specialist Mary Martin and HR Consultant Amee Albrecht attended a three-day training for Job and Career Transition Coach Training. The workshop was taught by Richard Knowdell, Executive Director of the Career Planning an Adult Development Network. Knowdell taught attendees how to administer career exploration assessments, help clients build and managing a career strategy, and motivate clients to reach their career potential. The training was sponsored by NoRTEC and hosted by Butte Pic.

Ashley had moved back to Alturas and was looking for
employment. Lina our frontline receptionist referred her to our Employment
Specialist Mary Martin who talked to Ashley and determined that she
was an eligible youth. Ashley met with our youth adviser Chris Sullivan
and from there Ashley followed through with all of her assessments and
with her friendly personality and an interest in a clerical position
we decided to put Ashley into a work experience at the Modoc Employment
Center. While Ashley was working in the center she was actively utilizing
our services to obtain a full time position. She didn’t hesitate
to send out contact letters and resumes to perspective employers. Her
hard work paid off when she was offered a position at the dentist office
after only being here for one week.
Congratulation Ashley your hard work paid off.
I would like to thank Mary Martin, Employment Specialist
for submitting this Story.

MEC Presentation
November Goals
Each month during the AFWD Team Meeting, each county presents an overview of the One-Stop activities. This overview includes the number of job seekers served, applicant pool numbers, how many employers were served. The presentations started out as verbal overviews of each county. Since July, the presentations have taken on a new look. A tad bit of health competition has started and with that, please review this link which provides gives you an overview of the Modoc Employment Center activities. Thank You to Lina Isioridia for putting this together.
AFWD - The Big Picture
Holly Schirmer, Director of Business Services and Traci Holt, Executive Director for AFWD, had the privilege of presenting at the October 2007, WIB/GB Meeting. The focus of the presentation was to highlight AFWD's successes from July 1, 2007. AFWD started 2007-2008 renewed emphasis on the business first philosophy. The business first approach places the highest priority on serving the human resource needs of small businesses. As more business customers are pleased with the services received from the One-Stops, including recruiting assistance, the more job orders they bring to the One-Stops. And more job orders bring in more job seekers, which increase the applicant pool available to employers. It’s a win, win situation for small business and job seekers. Our motto is, “Serving businesses to serve job seekers.”
We have worked diligently to reorganize the operations of the company to implement procedures that meet the needs of businesses. AFWD offers its services in four counties including Lassen, Plumas, Sierra, and Modoc, an area covering over 13,000 sq miles.
The results so far have been very impressive. More employers are utilizing AFWD’s human resource services and the requests for job order posting and customized recruitments are growing each week. Customized recruitments range from accepting applications for the employer, to pre screening, interviewing, and reference checking. In addition, the numbers of job seekers coming to the One-Stops continues to grow. Currently AFWD has an applicant pool of close to 500 job seekers looking for work. That’s the kind of pool that employers are eager to tap. The bottom line is that people are obtaining satisfying jobs in the communities in which they live, and our businesses are getting the employees they are looking for.

A BIG Thanks to the AFWD Team for all of your accomplishments!!
